Alpine Ibex: Masters of the Mountainous Tundra

The alpine ibex is a breathtaking symbol of survival in the most rugged terrains. While not native to the tundra, its high-altitude mountain habitats mimic tundra conditions with freezing temperatures and sparse vegetation. These sure-footed goats are incredible climbers, often seen scaling nearly vertical cliffs to escape predators or reach nutrient-rich moss and lichen.

Male ibexes are particularly striking, boasting large, curved horns that can grow up to 40 inches (101 cm). These horns are not only tools for dominance battles during mating season but also a testament to the animal's age and health. Despite their adaptability, alpine ibex populations are vulnerable to environmental changes, particularly as glaciers retreat and plant life patterns shift.
