Tundra Wildlife Chronicles

European Bison (Zubr): The King of Ancient Forests
The European bison, or zubr, is the largest land mammal in Europe and a symbol of conservation success. Once driven to extinction in the wild, they have been reintroduced to forests across Europe, including regions near tundra-like conditions. Zubrs are herbivores, feeding on grasses, bark, and shrubs, and their grazing habits play a critical role in maintaining forest ecosystems.
Standing up to 6.5 feet (2 meters) at the shoulder and weighing over 2,000 pounds (900 kg), zubrs are imposing yet surprisingly agile creatures. They live in small herds, led by a dominant female, and communicate through grunts and bellows. Conservation programs have brought these majestic animals back from the brink, but they still face threats from habitat loss and disease. Continued efforts to expand protected areas and corridors are vital for their survival.
